AoE: The FAST & inexpensive alternative to iSCSI & Fibre Channel SAN!

AoE is a simple, non-routable protocol designed specifically to transport SATA disk commands over Ethernet. Coraid products take full advantage of the simplicity of the ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) storage protocol, to provide a simple and affordable alternative to iSCSI or Fibre Channel SAN. AoE delivers a simple, high performance, low cost alternative to iSCSI and FibreChannel for networked block storage by eliminating the processing overhead of TCP/IP. AoE is natively supported in Linux 2.6.11 and beyond.

AoE enables disk drives to become AoE devices connected directly to an Ethernet network. An AoE device can be a single physical disk or a logical device made up of multiple disks. EtherDrive Appliances are AoE target devices.

Coraid EtherDrive® Storage Products use the ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) storage protocol. AoE provides a means for a block storage device to be connected directly to an Ethernet network. An AoE device can be a single physical disk or a logical device made up of multiple disks. EtherDrive products offer internal RAID (0, 1, 5, 10), hot-swappable disks, and support standard SATA disk drives. EtherDrive products are AoE target devices.

EtherDrive Appliances

EtherDrive Appliances are Storage Appliances with internal RAID – they provide a shared Ethernet interface for multiple disks. These simple to use appliances provide a bridge between the disks and Ethernet using AoE. Each disk can be individually accessible on the network (JBOD) or can be configured into RAID sets presenting one or more logical EtherDrive storage devices to the network.

Etherdrive Virtual Storage Appliance

EtherDrive Storage Appliances use the open ATA-over-Ethernet (AoE) network storage protocol. AoE is a fast, simple, affordable alternative to Fibre Channel or iSCSI storage. Coraid's EtherDrive VirtualStorage Appliances can be added to an EtherDrive AoE SAN to create dynamically resizeable (elastic) AoE target devices (LUNs) from physical AoE devices.

CLN21
	The CLN21 is a 64 bit Linux server in a 1U rack mount chassis. It boots from flash and mounts AoE storage LUNs located in EtherDrive Storage Appliances connected via an AoE SAN. CLN21-FT (Fault Tolerant)
	The CLN21-FT is an active-passive pair of 64 bit Linux servers in 1U rack mount chassis. They boot from flash and mount AoE storage LUNs located in EtherDrive Storage Appliances connected via an AoE SAN. Only one CLN21 is active at any one time.  Heartbeat signals are passed between the primary (active) and backup (passive) servers. Heartbeat also controls a power switch to provide STONITH protection. Clients share files using NFS or SMB/CIFS protocols over TCP/IP connections.
