Plasmon Total Cost of Ownership Analysis

Archival Storage (TCO) Analysis

The Archival Storage Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) Analysis quantifies the acquisition and operating costs of different storage technologies used for archiving data. The products selected for comparison are magnetic tape (AIT-3), magnetic disk (Centera) and three optical storage technologies: DVD, UDO and MO. The purpose of the study is to provide a balanced assessment of actual costs so that companies implementing archive strategies can use the results as a framework for their own appraisals.

In order to provide a realistic TCO assessment, the 20-page report is based on the actual requirements from the London branch of a global financial institution. The total size of the archive is 12TB with frequent, random access to the archived records. The chart below summarizes the financial findings of the report by breaking down the most significant components of cost over a three-year operating period.

ESG Active Archival Storage TCO At-a-Glance:

Industry Analysts Enterprise Storage Group Release TCO Analysis and confirm Plasmon's UDO Much Lower in Cost than Disk-Based Archiving!

Selecting and implementing technologies for deep and active digital archives has historically been a choice between tape and optical solutions. Content addressed systems that are based on commodity disk drives have recently become available as an alternative. The Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) "Active Archival Storage TCO" provides a third party analysis regarding the cost of acquisition and ownership of available archival technologies - including tape, optical, and disk-based. The analysis is based on the actual case study of a financial services firm shopping for a 12 TB archive solution. The organization needed to archive 8 GB of new data and manage 2,500 queries daily. The cost of acquisition and ownership was measured over 3 years of operation. Only true quantifiable list prices were included in this study to avoid the effects of subjective interpretation.
