PoINT Software & Systems
PoINT Software & Systems GmbH of Siegen, Germany, specializes in the development of software products and software solutions for mass storage systems, especially optical media. With its software products PoINT provides complete solutions with a broad application spectrum. Products developed by PoINT are sold by about 50 distribution partners worldwide in over 25 countries and have so far proven successful in more than 1,000,000 installations. Due to many years of business experience in the international market PoINT has extensive expert competence and well-established distribution channels at its disposal. No matter which storage system one applies, PoINT is the storage specialist with long-standing experience and extensive technical know-how.
Since 1985 the PoINT-Team has been developing and distributing optical storage systems successfully on the international market. During that time PoINT has essentially helped initiate and has continuously influenced the development and standardization of all major CD technologies. Originally PoINT was established as globally active Competence Center of the Philips Corporation. It was then transformed into a European project and product center for Digital Equipment Corporation. In December 1994 the managing executives took over the entire spin-off department from Digital Equipment including its products and rights and established PoINT Software & Systems GmbH as independent company.
Secure and tiered archival using standardized hardware
Data availability and authenticity are critical tasks with major impact on the economical success of today’s companies. Rapid recovery after a system failure and data authentication control are essential to ensure business continuity. Within this scope, responsible management must be able to reduce the risk of liability by choosing appropriate means. In addition, the growing volume of data requires solutions, which bring storage costs down at the same time.PoINT Archiver provides secure, cost effective and network-wide filter based archiving and migration. The content of defined folders is monitored by PoINT Archiver. Files contained in these folders are copied, moved or migrated into an archive according to defined filters. PoINT Archiver stores the archives on file systems like NAS hard disks or on optical media like DVD/BD. PoINT Archiver can even use both technologies by replicating the archive to an additional file system or to optical media, thus improving data availability. Selection of the right hardware, a well chosen technology mix and a well defined archive strategy depends on individual requirements.
Directories on the PoINT Archiver server as well as any accessible network share can be monitored. If local folders are monitored, data archived on a file system optionally can be deleted from the source directory and replaced by a link. This results in a reduction of used hard disk space and in minimized backup and recovery time. In this way significant savings can be achieved without changing existing applications or workflows. In order to recognize possible manipulations of archived data, digital fingerprints of individual files, but also complete media or archive images are encrypted and stored in a data base and in the corresponding archive image or medium. This assures trustworthiness of the archive and its documents. PoINT Archiver provides companies, organizations and agencies with the security and authenticity of information required to fulfil the constantly rising number of compliance regulations.
Tiered Archiving
The PoINT Tiered Archive File System (PoINT TAFS) provides a storage hierarchy using a variety of technologies. This architecture provides a solution to overcome the individual limitation of a specific technology. The user has a wide variety of options to define the level of security and select the combination of hardware and technologies to be used. Possible configurations vary from a simple USB hard disk as simple archive device to a mirrored volume set in a jukebox with additional replication by a CD/DVD/BD production systemData Security
Digital fingerprints of the files and of a complete medium are encoded and stored on the media, in the corresponding archive image and also in the database to recognize possible manipulation of archived data. Documents which have been deleted or changed are identified and reported to the administrator. Additionally, the files in the source folder can be compared with the database or with the archived files. An optional encryption module further protects the entire file system, preventing unauthorized access to archived data. The combination of a system key and different archive keys makes the files illegible outside a specific PoINT Archiver installation. This method combines the advantages of removable media with the high level of security offered by closed systems.Archive
PoINT Archiver periodically monitors data in selected network folders. According to defined filters relevant data is copied, moved or migrated to an archive. Additionally, PoINT Archiver can identify modifications of files after archival by using configurable criteria (e. g. date, archive bit, file contents) which finally leads to archival of a different version of that file.Search and Retrieve
PoINT Archiver displays the structure of the archived data by a "Directory Tree" view very similar to the well known Windows Explorer paradigm. The file related information (e. g. name, size, date of preparation) and the name of the corresponding archive medium or image can be queried for each stored file version. During retrieval of an individual file or directory, or a complete off-line archive, PoINT Archiver displays a list of all required media and prompts the user to import them into the publishing system. The requested files are copied automatically into the selected target directory, however, only those which are needed.PoINT Archiver Highlights
